Updates(with numbers) on the Earthquake on the South of Haiti: the toll is growing

In the last forty-eight hours the rescuers have been able to extract 34 living people from the rubble, the provisional toll of loss of human life rose to 1,941 dead on Tuesday. More than 9,900 injured and 60,759 houses destroyed have been recorded, according to the Directorate of Civil Protection (DPC).

20 schools are totally destroyed and 74 others are partially destroyed in the South department indicates the representative of the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) in Haiti, Bruno Maes.

About 1.2 million people, including 540,000 children affected estimates the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef).

“684,400 people need emergency humanitarian assistance in the 3 departments which represents about 40% of the population of the most affected departments, which is 1.6 million people, according to  DPC.

A few hours after the earthquake, 28 inmates from the civil prison of Les Cayes set fire to 7 cells and dug a passage behind the prison and then escaped. Prison officials will shortly communicate the list of escapees, said the chief prosecutor. Prisoners are transferred to the national penitentiary and to the Petit-Goâve prison.

The United Nations has announced an allocation of $ 8 million to help victims of the August 14 earthquake. The announcement was made by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres in a note published on the UN website on August 17, 2021. The said amount will be used to “provide essential health care, ‘drinking water, emergency shelters and sanitary facilities for all those affected,’ the note said.
