New provisional assessment of the earthquake in the South of Haiti

1,297 deaths, 5,700 injured, more than 13,000 houses destroyed

The toll of the powerful earthquake that devastated the southern departments of Haiti is increasing hour by the hour.

According to Civil Protection, the human toll of the earthquake rose at the end of the day of August 15 to 1,297 dead: 1,054 in the South, 119 in Grand ‘Anse, 122 in Nippes and 2 in the North-West . More than 5,700 injured are recorded in the departments of Sud, Nippes and Grand ‘Anse.

Regarding habitat damage, 13,694 houses were destroyed and 13,785 houses damaged in the 3 most affected departments (South, Grand ’Anse and Nippes). Many public buildings (hospitals, schools, hotels, churches, private companies, etc.) suffered damage or collapsed, Civil Protection said in its latest report.

More than 30,250 affected families have already registered in the 3 most affected departments, while assessments are continuing, says Civil Protection.

And with the imminent menace of this tropical depression Grace, the risk for more casualties hitting these affected areas are kind of doubled. We pray this ouragan doesn’t complicate things and get this way too out of control than it actually is to handle.
